We all know that time of the day when it comes around. You know, that time when chocolate nor coffee gives you a pick me up, the afternoon slump! ((I see you all nodding your heads)) It is then, in that moment, the thoughts of 5 p.m. start to consume you. Your mind drifts to what your evening plans are, or what the weekend looks like. The mental check out begins!!! You don't WANT to be this person, but alas, you don't know any other way to be. There is another way!
I have five easy ways you can perk up your afternoon and be more productive than ever! Let's see what those are below: 5 MINUTE DESK CLEAN Spending just five minutes to return the pens to the cup, straightening your files, wiping down the area, getting rid of unwanted items you've collected throughout the day and filing will provide you a fresh start to work the rest of your day. 5 MINUTE WALK MEETING - OUT IN THE AIR I live in a climate that has some undesirable temps (often referred to as the tundra, aka, Michigan) so, I get it when you say it is too cold! I promise you, however, that being in the brisk temps do something soulful for us and our bodies. What I mean by a walk meeting is a meeting with yourself. Do a mental check in. How are you feeling about today? What is happening that is A) in your control to change and B) in your control to leave alone? Both to change or to "pick the battle" are both powerful things that can end your day on a good or bad note. Choose to make it a good note! TAKE A POWER NAP Now, before you tell me that you can't because you feel weird or you don't have anywhere to go. Let me share with you that you can and this is how: Recognize that a 5 minute (yes, 5) can do a lot for your mood. Find your favorite quiet place. (If it happens to be the bathroom stall, honey. I won't judge you and neither will anyone else) Then, break out your eye cover and set your alarm for 5 minutes and....go! READ A PAGE OR CHAPTER OF A BOOK Self Empowerment books tend to be good options for this but if there is a fictional book that gets you excited, by all means, choose that. Typically when we read motivating selections, it can boost our mood and help us move forward in a positive light for the rest of our day. FOCUS ON ONE THING Sure, you may have two or three things that need to be accomplished, however, rank those in importance. Do the most important thing first, even if it is hard, and follow suite with the rest if you have time. With this, recognize that the one thing you chose, made a difference in your day and even your next morning by not procrastinating until quitting time. The sense and real accomplishment on this is the true motivator. Start small. Pick one thing each week to do and add one as you go along. By the end of week 5, you will be a master at leading your afternoon, rather than your afternoon leading you. I find that when I am a leader of my afternoons, I become that much more productive even at home.
